About

Johan Marais is a naturalist, conservationist, herpetologist, and photographer and has been involved with reptiles for over forty years. Johan has done extensive field work with leading herpetologists and has written a number of books on reptiles - his books have sold over half a million copies to date. He has contributed to a variety of magazine and newspaper articles, television and radio programmes, and is well-known on the corporate talk circuit. He is also often called upon to present talks on snakes and snakebite in Africa at international symposia and is a Basic Life Support instructor.

On our on-site corporate training, delegates are taught the safest protocols for snake removal - at no point do they need to make physical contact with a snake. Making physical contact with the snakes usually goes against the sites health and safety protocols, as it increases the chances of being bitten.

We train over 3000 delegates a year on around 200 corporate sites in South Africa alone - and all these delegates are taught safe snake removal techniques using the appropriate snake handling equipment.
There should be no compromise when it comes to safety on site.

There's a recent post of a 'massive' snake suppose

There's a recent post of a 'massive' snake supposedly seen on the Orange River in South Africa.

The bottom line is that the image is a fake AI image.
You can see the colour of the water around the snake does not match the rest of the river and there are no ripples or waves around the snake, which should be present around the body of a floating snake.

There are guesses that it is a mamba - they do not occur along the Orange River and seldom exceed 3 m in length, with maximum lengths of 4.5m.
Other guesses are a Python - again, they don't occur along the Orange River.
The AI generator clearly used a Python/Boa/Anaconda to create this image.
The Southern Africa Python has a max length of 5.5m and in this fake image the snake is over 10m in legnth.

How many of you read Wilbur Smith novels? Sadly passed away three years ago. Many of us read his first novel When the lion feeds which was initially banned in South Africa. My first interaction with Wilbur was back in the early 80s. I was curator at Transvaal Snake Park and Wilbur contacted me to verify a snake scene that he had written about. He remained in contact over the years and we met on a few occasions at book launches when I owned Fascination Books. An incredible man and over 140 million of his books sold. He wrote r9 books and they were translated into many languages.

Our Namibian reptile photographic safari is coming

Our Namibian reptile photographic safari is coming to and end and it has been a very special trip. Over 4,000 km and we have photographed a great variety of reptiles including a number of specials. Ivuzamanzi, the ASI Land Cruiser, has behaved well and never gave us any trouble. Our choice of aftermarket extras was spot on and everything worked perfectly. We have one more rare reptile to find and photograph, then the long trek to Pretoria.
